lucas – lifestyle session in east lansing, mi

My job allows me to take part in some pretty special moments in a family’s life, and it is a huge honor when I get to document a family over time. So I was over the moon excited when Andy and Suzanne asked me to photograph their son Lucas. I photographed Andy and Suzanne’s beautiful wedding a few years ago and it has remained one of my favorite weddings I have had the pleasure of photographing. Their wedding was filled with a lot of wonderful moments and a lot of laughter so I was excited to photograph this former twosome as a threesome. And Lucas is one cute kid—happy, energetic and an adorable chubby guy. It was wonderful catching up with Andy and Suzanne and documenting a little piece of their life with little Lucas. And Lucas was a trooper throughout the shoot, even when it interfered with his naptime. Here are a few of my favorites from the session.

margot – newborn session in grand rapids, mi

I was so excited when my friend Jeanette facebooked me about taking pictures of her beautiful daughter Margot. I went to college with Jeanette (and we even lived together for one brief January) but since she now lives in San Francisco with her husband Joel it has actually been a couple years since I last saw her. So I was more than thrilled to hear she was coming to Grand Rapids and I would be able to meet her new baby. Margot is such a lovely baby and even though she has a bit of colic (an experience I can certainly sympathize with) she was content and even happy throughout our photo shoot. Margot is definitely a charmer and it was wonderful to see how in love Jeanette and Joel are with their baby girl. It was wonderful seeing them again and I am so glad they asked me to document their growing family.

a new year and new beginnings, welcome to the world shiloh diane

More so this year than any other New Years I have been spending a lot of time rejoicing in the past, thinking about the future, and trying to establish priorities for the next year. 2010 and 2011 were absolutely amazing years—but also a complete whirlwind. 2010 was jam packed with fabulous clients and great weddings and I managed to top that (just a bit) by welcoming my daughter into the world spring of 2011. Since Tilly insisted on making her arrival right as wedding season began I scaled back on shooting weddings last year and found a new passion for portrait photography. As I enter another year I finally feel like I have time to take a breath and also take a good look at my business.

I have been so blessed since I started Telltale Photography and have the unique privilege of loving what I do. But I also know that since my daughter was born my time is a lot more precious to me now. So I want to make sure that I don’t loose sight of why I started this business—I love photography and I want to be able to tell stories through great images. It’s so easy to be distracted by what is trendy, what wedding blogs are claiming is the next big thing, and shooting for publication and exposure instead of for my clients. This year my resolution is to stay focused on what I love, which are people, their personal stories, and creating images that actually mean something.

While some changes are in the works (a new website, maybe some new branding), what I am really excited about is staying true to my convictions by creating the very best images I can and continuing to hone my skills as a storyteller. I look forward to lots more weddings and portrait sessions in 2012, and I am excited about every opportunity I have to create not just pretty pictures but important images. I want each client to feel like their wedding images or portrait session really captured the way they are and how they felt—I want to tell the story of their lives not recreated in fiction but told in authentic detail through beautiful images.

So it isn’t just the New Year that has brought on this feeling of rebirth and renewed passion, a lot of it has been brought on while editing one of my last shoots of 2011, the birth of Shiloh Diane. I have always wanted to shoot a birth and I feel so blessed that Lauren and Kory asked me to document the arrival of their first baby. What an amazing honor and changing experience. It was so overwhelming emotionally (yes, I bawled my eyes out when she was born) and it has helped rejuvenate my enthusiasm for photography and helped me realize what a gift it is that I get to use a camera to share someone’s personal experience. So instead of posting my favorite images I am posting a slideshow that chronicles the over 30 hours of labor it took to bring beautiful Shiloh into the world. It isn’t too long (I promise) but I hope you take the additional time to watch the entire slide show and that you experience the raw emotion of the day and the absolute joy of welcoming a new life into the world. Thank you Lauren, Kory and Shiloh for letting me tell your story. (If you would like to view the slideshow in a new browser window you can reach it at www.telltalephotography.com/Plockmeyer)

stella & mack – lifestyle session in white lake, mi

Stella is becoming quite the regular on my blog. This is the third time this year I have been able to photograph the lovely Stella, this time for her 7-month photos. I couldn’t believe how big she is now—she scoots around so well and even sits up on her own. And Stella is definitely one of the most expressive babies I have ever met. Her smile is absolutely infectious and you can tell that she has a ton of fun with her mom and dad. I just love the images of the three of them interacting together. This session was also special because it included Stella’s little cousin Macarius. After taking some pictures of the cousins together I got to spend some time photographing Mack and his parents Elisa and Jackford. Mack is absolutely adorable and it was so much fun getting to see this new family together. Stella and Mack are going to have so much fun growing up together and it was a pleasure to photograph their first official joint photo shoot.

abbot – newborn session in lansing, mi

I love photographing newborn sessions because it is such an amazing time in a family’s life. Abbot’s newborn session was particularly special because it included his super cute and very attentive sisters, Annabella and Vivienne. Abbot is such a calm and peaceful baby and Vivi was clearly transfixed by him—she couldn’t stop smothering him with kisses (and I couldn’t stop photographing them together). I had the pleasure of photographing this family last year and it is so cool to see how in just a year this family has grown and changed so much. I feel really honored when I get to photograph a family over a period of years and it was really special to be able to document the addition of Abbot to the family.

dashiell – newborn session in grand rapids, mi

Two years ago I had the pleasure of photographing Jaime and Josh’s wedding and I was thrilled for them when they announced in August that their little boy Dashiell had entered the world. When hurricane Irene was forecasted to hit their home in Brooklyn this smart threesome decided to get out of town and make a trip to Grand Rapids to visit with family and friends. While they were in town I had the pleasure of meeting handsome Dash and taking some pictures of his family. It was wonderful seeing Josh and Jaime again and getting to see their amazing little boy (and swap a few mommy stories too).  At only three weeks old I am sure Dash won’t remain this little for long, and it was so wonderful to be able to capture this moment in time for Jaime and Josh.

kolk family – newborn session in white lake, mi

telltale01

It was only a few weeks ago that I had the pleasure of photographing Jason and Carol’s maternity session. When I photographed Carol’s 36 week baby bump no one had any idea that just a week later beautiful Stella Rose would be born. Stella was just a peanut at birth weighing only 6lbs 2oz, and you can tell that she is still so tiny and precious at her two week old session. Even though the timing of Stella’s arrival was a big surprise Jason and Carol have quickly adapted to life with a newborn and are taking everything in stride (and they even seem rested!).

I  love photographing newborns because it is such a wonderful time in a families life and such a momentous occasion to document. I am so honored that I got to photograph the expanding Kolk family and look forward to photographing Stella throughout her first year.

mccambridge family-newborn session in columbus, oh

telltale-47

Last week I got to spend a glorious two days in Columbus, Ohio. Now I admit Ohio may not be everyone’s first choice for a destination photo shoot but for me it felt like coming home. I lived in Columbus for five years and really grew to love the city. And it was awesome to be able to travel south from the murder mitten to catch up with a few people and to take some photographs. First up was Tracie, Jeff and beautiful baby Phinn. The McCambridge’s have an amazing (and super photogenic) home and it was so great meeting Phinn who is as charming in real life as he is in these photos. We also got to take advantage of some spring sunshine and walked to a nearby park to shoot outdoors (something I haven’t been able to do in months). It was so wonderful spending the afternoon with Tracie, Jeff and Phinn and can’t thank them enough for inviting me into their home and to document their growing family.

One of my favorites parts about being a wedding and portrait photographer is that I get to be present for so many important moments in a couple’s life. From engagement sessions and weddings to lifestyle portrait sessions I get to witness and capture some amazing things. But shooting a newborn session for first time parents is a particularly special privilege.  Getting to see two people falling hopelessly in love with their new baby is amazing and I am so thankful to the new parents who invite me into their lives (and homes) to photograph their growing family. So I was absolutely thrilled when Christina and Derek contacted me to photograph their beautiful new son Jonah. Jonah was amazing throughout the whole session and I could gush about what a wonderful baby he is. It was wonderful shooting at Christina and Derek’s home and you can see in the images that it was a beautiful and sunny spring day (a nice change from the cold and cloudy winter we have had in Michigan). Here are a few of my favorites from the session and of course I couldn’t help but include a few photos of their fur baby Winston.

I feel so lucky that a part of my job involves witnessing and documenting different points in people’s lives. I first photographed Joel and Leslie at their 2006 wedding and was so thrilled when they invited to me photograph their beautiful new daughter Cora Jane. It is amazing to see a couple grow into a family and to be able to photograph such an incredible and important moment in their lives. I love my job. And Cora is adorable. At just over a week old she was such a good sport throughout her first official photo shoot and has the most amazing and delicate little features (and that hair is awesome). I love that Joel and Leslie decided to have me photograph Cora during her bath time. At only a week old bath time is a big event in a little girls life and I thought it was a wonderful way to document their new life as a young family. I am so glad Joel and Leslie invited me to spend the afternoon with them and Cora and that I got to photograph their beautiful new daughter. Here are a few of my favorite images from the session.
